Weight Loss Benefits of African Mango

Published:February 17th, 2012

The bush mango or the wild mango is a native plant of the rainforests in the West Africa. It is known as Irvingia gabonensis in the scientific world. The fruit is yellow and is similar to the regular mango fruit. The nut is known as the “dika” nut locally and is a rich source of protein, fiber and heart healthy fats. The extracts from the nut is believed to aid in weight loss.

The nut of the African mango contains the hormone called leptin. Leptin is a natural appetite suppressant. It alters appetite in the brains where it signals satiety. Leptin also utilizes fat for energy. However, several people may not benefit from leptin if they have high levels of a protein called C-reactive protein. C-reactive protein is produced in the liver as response to disease state and infections and it renders the leptin ineffective. The extract from the African mango is able to combat leptin resistance by lowering C-reactive protein levels, thus promoting fat usage and appetite suppression.

The “dika” nut is an excellent source of soluble fiber. This helps lower the LDL cholesterol levels. The African mango is also thought to increase adiponectin, which is a hormone that promotes glucose and fat metabolism. Several studies have shown the benefits for the African mango. A study published in “Lipids in Health and Disease” found that the group of study participants treated with African mango had lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. It also improved HDL levels. The control group receiving placebo did not have any changes.

How does the African Mango work?

Fat burner
African mango is a super food that helps burn fat by increasing the metabolic rate of the body. Studies have shown that the metabolism is increased naturally while taking this supplement. The weight loss is from the fat mass rather than the water weight, which in turn helps you maintain the weight for longer periods of time.

Appetite suppressant
The extracts of the African mango nut suppresses the appetite by regulating leptin. This provides you with a greater satiety and helps you stay full longer.

Delays the digestive process
The African mango will delay the process of gastric emptying, which in turn delays the digestions keeping you full longer. Along with appetite suppression, it can result in significant weight loss.

Rich source of fiber
The extract is rich in soluble fiber which helps lower the bad cholesterol levels and help maintain good lipid levels.

As with any supplements, check with your doctor if you are taking any medications. Following a sensible diet and regular physical activity will help with further weight loss and helps in keeping the weight off.
